Hunters Hill, NSW, Australia - My Home for 2016!
Happy Thursday, December 10, 2015!
Time is drawing near for me to leave for Australia for a year. I have been busy finishing up commitments at school and attending night concerts of our band, orchestra, and next week our Morning Glories Choir. If you will recall, last week I discussed the school where I will be working, Beaumont Road Primary School in the suburb of Killara north of Sydney. This week’s blog is focusing upon where we will actually be living in Australia. Located about 15-20 minutes from Beaumont Road School, the Sydney suburb of Hunters Hill, NSW will be my hometown for 2016.
Here is a description of the area as told by Helen (my exchange partner).
“Hunters Hill is a leafy suburb on the lower north shore of Sydney. It is an old established part of the city with a village atmosphere. The Joubert brothers were the founders of Hunters Hill, consequently the name of the street. Their original house with stables (which is now a residence as well) is still to be found down the road. It has many great walks, views and many facilities. It is approximately eight kilometres or a ten minute drive from the city. There is regular bus service #506 to the city that takes about twenty five minutes and saves having to find parking in the city.
The apartment is within an effortless, near level, few minutes’ walk to the local Hunters Hill shops. There is an extensive choice of local amenities and all your needs could be met locally – leisure, medical, food, etc. The local shops include a supermarket, fruit and vegetable store, delicatessen, two bakeries, two butchers, Newsagent, Chemist, Laundromat, two Hairdressers, Beautician, boutique dress store, dentist, two medical centers, alternative medicine options, sports medicine, podiatrist, bank, travel agent, lawyers, veterinarian, and two Real Estate Agents. These are very convenient – the food shops are a bit more expensive than the major shopping centers.
Within the Hunters Hill low-rise shopping area there are also a number of eateries and restaurants including six cafes, Thai, two Italian, Indian, two Chinese, and the local pub serving modern Australian cuisine.
As I overlook the Figtree Bridge and Lane Cove River, there are many picturesque and scenic walks from my place, around the local streets and waterways. Hunters Hill is on the route of “The Great North Walk” which stretches from the city through Hunters Hill all the way to Newcastle and takes about four days to complete in one walk.
Here is a website that shows all the walking trails in the area:
The Hunters Hill area also holds annual festivals and exhibitions. There is the Moocooboola Festival, a Food and Wine Festival, Hunters Hill Street Feast, a local art exhibition at the Town Hall, “Sculptures by the Sea” at Woolwich to name a few. A local amateur theatre is also in Hunters Hill on the peninsula. This website gives a rundown on “what’s on” in Hunters Hill:
As you can see, Mitch and I are getting excited about this adventure. We are busy getting our house ready for Helen to occupy while she is living in Highlands Ranch, CO and working at Mortensen Elementary School in Littleton, CO. So, next week, I would like to tell you more about Helen Nemeth and all that this fine Australian Professional Educator will be bringing to our Mortensen Community.
Cheers!
